Virgin Skull Mexicana Bust by Marie Meier

MT: Hello Marie, after seeing your unique Think-UP custom I wanted to learn a little more about you to share with everyone. I would like to know where are you from originally and can I please have some background information on the art you create?

I'm from a little town near Strasbourg in France, I lived in the oldest home of the village! I 'm living with a hard heart disease since my birth, so drawing and painting became my first hobby because when you do that you don't have to run fast! I began my work as a child drawing battles of dinosaurs with a lot of blood and violence (big teeth, big claws which tear throats..) it was very fun for me! When I was young I loved blood. It's when I entered in University that I began painting and exhibiting with Peter Greenaway. I touched a little on illustrations but not much. It was only in 2003 when my disease became more heavy that I decided to live my passion for "illo". I love fifties, pin-up, rock'n'roll, all to do something I really enjoy. Six months later, I'm working for Rock & Folk the best music magazine in France. (Many thanks to Philippe!)

MT: The piece is very interesting and quite a pleasure to the eyes! I want to know, what is it that inspired the custom?

This custom was inspired by my passion for holy pictures and Mexican folk art. I'm a big fan of Frida Kahlo and the Day of the Dead. I love the colors that the Mexicans use during this celebration so much! It's really beautiful and... living!

MT: Are you planning to do more projects in the realm of art toys?

I am planning some projects, I'd like to conceive a family of toys from some characters of my illustrations. I've got the ideas but not the time to realize the models. It will be very soon... I want continue to customize toys as well.

MT: Do you have any tips on working with the Think-UP bust? Is there any DO's or DON'Ts you would like to share?

Before I work on toys I sandpaper it, then put gesso all over and still I sandpaper it. The painting with acrylic is more easy to use after this first operation. I finish with a varnish anti-UV. I never use posca, it's not always precise for me.

MT: Is the piece for sale and are you available for commissioned jobs for similar type of customs?

This piece is not for sale, it was a present for a friend who is a painter. But the next one I'm working on (with tentacles) will be for sale. I'm always available for commissions!
